How does rooftop solar work?
Solar rooftops are a sustainable energy source that converts solar energy into electricity with the help of photovoltaic (PV) panels.
A solar rooftop operation typically consists of the following key components:
> Solar Panels (PV Modules) – Convert sunlight into DC electricity.
> DC Combiner Box – Collects DC output from multiple solar panels.
> Inverter – Converts DC power to AC power for household or commercial use.
> AC Distribution Box – Distributes AC power to loads or the grid.
> Energy Meter – Monitors power generation and consumption.
> Battery Storage (Optional) – Stores excess energy for later use.
> Grid Connection (Optional) – Exports surplus electricity to the grid. -
Can solar rooftops be installed on any roof material?
Solar roof tops can be installed in any roof that can withstand the weight of the panels. Note that each solar panel will weigh around 30-35kgs.
-
How much electricity do solar panels produce?
On an average, solar panels generate about 4-9 units per kW based on their models.
-
What is the subsidy provided by the Government for solar rooftops?
Subsidies can be availed only for residential buildings. The subsidies eligible for solar rooftops as of 2025 is listed here. Subsidies are granted to consumers by the government after the initial payment and installation of rooftop solar by applying at www.pmsuryaghar.gov.in.

-
How do solar rooftops work during winters?
While summers are the peak production season for solar plants, solar rooftops can still work effectively during colder months. Although it is possible that the generation might even drop to 0 during winters, on a yearly average, the total production will be from 4-9 units per kW based on the model.
-
What is net metering?
Net metering is the system that credits owners for the excess electricity generated by their installed solar panels and sent to the grid. It is simply a bi-directional electricity meter that measures the energy consumed from the grid as well as energy supplied to the grid. The total transaction is then read by the Electricity Board to tally the exported and imported units and allot the credits.
-
What regulatory approvals are required for installing the solar panels and claiming the government subsidy?
For solar plants above 20Kw, we need to have building and structure stability certificate and a safety certificate from the electricity board before connecting the plant to the grid.
